Enough Excuses: The West Highland Line Needs Fixing Now

A man standing at a Scottish railway station entrance, looking out towards the platform with a ScotRail train visible in the background.

Passengers using the West Highland Line are being asked to tolerate cold, uncomfortable and poorly maintained trains, particularly during winter services. Reports of carriages failing to reach basic indoor temperatures raise serious concerns about passenger wellbeing and staff working conditions, especially when journeys take place in sub-zero weather.

While ScotRail has acknowledged that the trains used on this route are among the oldest in its fleet, meaningful improvements are still being talked about in years rather than months. Highland communities should not be expected to accept lower standards or unsafe conditions simply because of where they live.

Sign the petition today to demand warm, safe trains on the West Highland Line — and to make clear that action is needed now, not in another decade.

Warm, Safe Trains Now: Fix ScotRail’s West Highland Line

I the undersigned call upon Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, and Hannah Ross, Chair of ScotRail, to take urgent action to ensure that all West Highland Line services operate at safe, warm, and dignified temperatures. This must include the immediate enforcement of minimum temperature standards on trains, transparent monitoring and reporting of carriage temperatures, urgent fixes to heating systems, and accelerated investment in refurbishment or replacement rolling stock. No passenger or member of staff should be put at risk, or forced to endure freezing conditions, simply by travelling on Scotland’s railway network
