As many of you are aware, Jimmy Savile’s former residence in Glencoe has once again been the target of vandalism. This latest incident saw an outbuilding engulfed in flames, causing significant damage.
I am saddened that the house has been targeted once again, but I am not surprised. This has long been a blot on the landscape since the appalling behaviour of Savile was first revealed. When the house was first vandalised over a decade ago, I was vilified by some for suggesting it should be demolished, as it would continue to be a focus for people’s disgust. Unfortunately, it seems some people can’t break the link with this vile man.
It’s easy to forget that, before Savile took up residence, Allt-na-Reigh was the home of Hamish MacInnes, a true mountaineering hero. MacInnes was a pioneering climber, a rescuer, an inventor, and a man who brought honour to Glencoe. It is unfortunate that his former home is now associated with a notorious paedophile rather than his incredible achievements.
The property has stood empty since Savile’s death in 2011, suffering repeated acts of vandalism. Over the years, it has become a morbid attraction and a painful reminder of his heinous crimes. In 2021, the cottage was purchased by retail entrepreneur Harris Aslam, who has since sought permission to demolish the existing structure and replace it with a modern family home. These plans have faced various challenges, including objections from the community and delays in the planning process.
We need to move on, and I hope now that the new owners have permission for demolition and a new home to be built, they move as quickly as possible. I suspect only then can the ghost of Savile finally be exorcised from Glencoe.
Let’s remember Glencoe for its breathtaking beauty, its rich history, and its true heroes – not for the shadow of one monstrous man.
